Falcons verlieren trotz London Touchdown im Wembley-Stadion

LONDON – Trotz eines Touchdowns von ausgerechnet Drake London mussten die Atlanta Falcons eine 23:7 Niederlage gegen die Jacksonville Jaguars im historischen Wembley-Stadion hinnehmen.

Letztendlich gab es Enttäuschung für die Falcons-Fans, die aus der ganzen Welt nach London strömten. Für die europäischen Fans fühlte es sich eher wie ein Heimspiel an, besonders die zahlreichen Falcons-Fans aus Deutschland und dem Vereinigten Königreich. Viele von ihnen nutzten das Angebot, ein actiongeladenes Wochenende voller Veranstaltungen in der englischen Hauptstadt zu genießen.

Nach einer schleppenden Leistung in der ersten Halbzeit gingen die Falcons mit einem Rückstand von 17:0 in die Pause. Die Herausforderung wurde noch größer, nachdem Quarterback Desmond Ridder zweimal abgefangen wurde.

Ridder war ehrlich nach dem Spiel: "Ich habe einen schrecklichen Job gemacht, mich um den Ball zu kümmern, und das hat das Spiel verändert. Ich muss das einfach besser machen."

Im Rückblick auf zwei aufeinanderfolgende Niederlagen sagte Head Coach Arthur Smith: "Die Realität ist, wir stehen bei 2-2. Wir müssen nach Atlanta zurückkehren und dieses Ding wieder in Gang bringen. Was auch immer wir tun müssen, um das Team wieder anzuschieben, werden wir tun."

1. Quarter – Die Jaguars erobern die Führung

Um dem Ganzen die Krone aufzusetzen, war es ausgerechnet ein ehemaliger Falcon, der den ersten Touchdown für Jacksonville erzielte. Trevor Lawrence verband sich mit Wide Receiver Calvin Ridley für einen 30-Yard-Touchdown und brachte die Jags mit 5:44 Minuten verbleibender Spielzeit im ersten Quarter in Führung. In ähnlicher Weise wie im Spiel in Detroit am letzten Wochenende hatten die Falcons den Anschluss verpasst.

2. Quarter – Die Falcons bleiben weiter frustriert

Die Jaguars nutzten die Gelegenheit, um ihren Vorsprung durch ein 56-Yard-Field-Goal von Brandon McManus auf 10:0 zu erhöhen.

Die Hoffnung der Falcons begann ein wenig zu verblassen, nachdem Desmond Ridder zweimal in schneller Folge abgefangen wurde. Darious Williams schnappte sich den ersten und lief ungehindert in die Endzone, während die Jags ihren Vorsprung auf beeindruckende 17:0 ausbauten, mit noch 4:31 Minuten in der Halbzeit.

Die Falcons blieben in der ersten Halbzeit ohne Punkte, und Ridder wurde im nächsten Angriff erneut abgefangen, dieses Mal von Andre Cisco.

Arthur Smith über die Interceptions von Desmond Ridder: "Das sind harte Lektionen für einen jungen Quarterback. Du wirst viel über dich selbst herausfinden, wenn du da draußen wieder auf den Platz kommst."

Aber diesmal konnten die Jags ihren Vorteil nicht in Punkte umwandeln, und schließlich gab es einen kleinen Trost für die Falcons.

Halbzeitstand: 17:0 Jaguars

3. Quarter – Die Falcons kommen endlich in Fahrt

Die Falcons mussten mit Schwung aus der Kabine kommen, um wieder ins Spiel zu finden. Und das taten sie! Bijan Robinson begann sich zu entfalten, während Ridder an Selbstvertrauen zu gewinnen schien.

Sehr passend war, dass Ridder in der Hauptstadt Englands mit Drake London einen 15-Yard-Touchdown-Pass vollzog und den Falcons neue Hoffnung gab. Die Comeback-Hoffnungen der Falcons setzten sich fort, da die Defense standhaft blieb und den Jaguars ein punktloses Viertel bescherte.

Ende 3. Quarter: 17:7 Jaguars

4. Quarter – Die Jaguars brüllen zum Sieg

Im 4. Quarter nahmen die Jaguars allerdings den Falcons den Wind aus den Segeln. Ein weiteres Field-Goal von McManus (43 Yards) erhöhte den Vorsprung der Jaguars auf 13 Punkte (20:7), mit noch 10:36 Minuten im letzten Viertel.

Und dann der endgültige Nagel im Sarg. Atlanta konnte einen 4th-and-3-Versuch von der 6-Yard-Linie der Jaguars nicht in Punkte umwandeln.

Ein weiteres Field-Goal von McManus brachte den Spielstand auf 23:7, mit noch 116 Sekunden verbleibender Spielzeit. Doch es gab noch Zeit für einen Ridder-Fumble, der einen enttäuschenden Tag im Wembley-Stadion abrundete.

ENDSTAND: 23:7 Jaguars

Nach der Niederlage in London, fliegen die Falcons mit einer Saisonbilanz von 2:2 nach Hause, wo sie auf die Houston Texans im Mercedes-Benz-Stadion treffen.
