DeAngelo Malone expected to go on injured reserve

Malone suffered an ankle injury in the Falcons' overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday in Germany.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said linebacker DeAngelo Malone is going to injured reserve with an ankle injury that he sustained in the team's overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday in Berlin, Germany.

"(Malone) is going to miss time, had a big-time injury," Morris said Wednesday. "He'll be going to IR. That was the big one."

It was reported by local media that Malone broke his ankle and underwent surgery.

Malone has been a core special team contributor in Atlanta since being drafted by the organization four seasons ago. This year, he also cross-trained at both inside and outside linebacker in Jeff Ulbrich's scheme. This season, the highlight for Malone came by way of a few special teams tackles on kickoff/punt return opportunities, but most notably putting the Falcons' Week 6 game against the Buffalo Bills on ice with an interception in the final few minutes of the win.

The hybrid lineman and special teamer is in the final year of his rookie contract after being drafted by Atlanta in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The 82nd overall pick was actually the compensation the Falcons received from the Colts in the Matt Ryan trade that March.

Morris also noted that offensive tackle Storm Norton is "probably" expected to revert back to injured reserve now that his 21-day window is closing. If/when that happens, Norton will be on injured reserve for the rest of the season.
