Robert Griffin III: Michael Penix Jr. will be 'breakout QB of the Year'

A former NFL quarterback himself, Robert Griffin III took to social media to share his thoughts on Falcons' young passer.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — It's often said game recognizes game.

Well, on Monday, former professional quarterback and current football analyst Robert Griffin III shared his opinions on Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. via X/Twitter — and they were all positive.

Griffin, who played for the Washington Commanders (2012-24), Cleveland Browns (2016) and Baltimore Ravens (2018-20), strung together a five-tweet thread about Penix, beginning with an overall bold proclamation.

Penix is entering his second season in Atlanta. The organization drafted him last year with the No. 8 overall pick. The selection raised eyebrows at the time because the Falcons signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins the month prior. However, the decision paid off early. By Week 16 of the 2024 season, the Falcons switched out Cousins as the starter in favor of Penix due to performance issues.

In the final three games, Penix competed 58 of his 100 pass attempts for 737 yards, with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He also carried the ball seven times for 11 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked three times.

The Falcons went 1-2 with Penix behind center, bringing their final record to 8-9.

As soon as the 2024 season ended, the Falcons made it clear their intention was to keep Penix as the starter in 2025. That has remained the case even with Cousins still rostered. Everyone involved is moving forward in support of this plan.
