FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — After starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was limited all week with a knee injury, reports circulated over the weekend that Kirk Cousins would start in his place. Those reports turned into reality as Penix was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins when the team released the inactives list.
Head coach Raheem Morris told reporters Friday that Cousins had taken more and more first-team reps as the week went on in preparation should Penix not be able to go. With the news now official, Cousins will be the team's starter Sunday.
"(Cousins has) played a lot of football in this league, it gives you a lot of comfort knowing that you have Kirk, a lot of confidence knowing that you have Kirk," Morris said earlier in the week. "Obviously, it will be all based on Mike's injury status and Mike's injury status alone."
Cousins started all but three of the Falcons' games in 2024.
In other injury news, the Falcons revealed wide receiver Drake London's game status, too. He was added to the game report Saturday as questionable after he was limited in practice Friday with a hip injury. London is inactive. This comes after the team released wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud earlier this week. So, the team will rely on Darnell Mooney, David Sills V, KhaDarel Hodge and Casey Washington as its group of core receivers.
The one piece of good news involving the Falcons' injury report is that running back Tyler Allgeier is active and available for Atlanta. He was working through a hip/knee injury all week.
As clarification, the Falcons had previously ruled out inside linebacker Divine Deablo (forearm) in the same Friday report. However, he will not show up in the team's inactives list because he was placed on injured reserve Saturday afternoon.
Here is the full list of Falcons' inactives for their game vs. the Miami Dolphins:
WR Drake London
QB Michael Penix Jr.
EDGE Jalon Walker
CB Billy Bowman Jr.
OL Michael Jerrell
DL LaCale London
DL Zach Harrison
The Falcons have arrived at Mercedes-Benz Stadium ahead of a Sunday match-up against the Miami Dolphins in Game 8.
