Falcons continuing kicker competition: 'You have to do that until you get it right'

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons' kicking saga continues as head coach Raheem Morris said Monday the Falcons will bring in competition for Parker Romo this week.

The Falcons signed Romo to the active roster as the team's kicker last Friday and released long-time starting kicker Younghoe Koo.

Koo's consistency had waned over the last few years, and after he missed a 44-yard field goal to end the team's Week 1 loss to Tampa Bay, the Falcons brought Romo in — along with a handful of other kickers — to compete with Koo. Romo was originally signed to the practice squad after that workout, and the decision was made prior to the team leaving for Minnesota in Week 2 that Romo would kick that weekend.

Romo did very well in his debut, connecting on all five of his field goal attempts, including a 54-yarder. It was a game in which the Falcons' offense only got into the end zone once despite making five trips to the red zone. So, those kicks mattered in the win.

Following that performance, the Falcons stuck with Romo. But in Carolina this weekend, Romo missed two first-quarter field goals in the shutout loss. He missed from 49 and 55 yards out.

"Obviously, it was not good enough and I have to be better for the team," Romo said in the locker room afterwards. "When they call me out onto the field, I need to go out there and make points. Today, I didn't do that."

Asked whether or not the team planned to stick with Romo through Week 4, Morris said the Falcons would bring competition in once again.

"That's what we've gotta do," Morris said. "You have to do that until you get it right, and you cannot allow that to be the reason to have this stuff happen. Right? He went 5-for-5 the week before. He went 0-for-2 this week. You gotta bring competition in, and that is something we're working diligently at."
