Atlanta Falcons sign RB Brian Robinson Jr.

Robinson entered the league as a third-round pick by the Washington Commanders in the 2022 NFL Draft and topped 700 yards on the ground in each of his first three seasons.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons have signed free agent running back Brian Robinson Jr.

It was expected that the Falcons would add to their backfield this offseason after Tyler Allgeier signed with the Arizona Cardinals as a free agent, and they landed a player with a lot to offer. Robinson entered the league as a third-round pick by the Washington Commanders in the 2022 NFL Draft and topped 700 yards on the ground in each of his first three seasons.

Robinson exhibited supreme toughness early in his career. As a rookie, he was the victim of an armed robbery attempt in Washington D.C. and shot twice in his lower body. Fortunately, the injuries sustained were not life-threatening, and he missed only the first four games of the 2022 season. Playing in only 12 games as a rookie, Robinson led the team with 797 rushing yards and scored three total touchdowns.

He started 28 games for the Commanders during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, as well as three playoff games. In that time, Robinson gained 2,059 yards from scrimmage and scored 17 total touchdowns, which ranked 23rd and 16th among all NFL players, respectively.

During training camp before the 2025 season, Robinson was traded to the San Francisco 49ers. He appeared in all 17 games for the 49ers last season as the primary backup for Christian McCaffrey. In that role, Robinson carried the ball 92 times for 400 yards and two touchdowns; he also ranked 14th in success rate among running backs, according to Next Gen Stats.

Now in Atlanta, Robinson figures to be the feature complement to another star running back who has drawn comparisons to McCaffrey: Bijan Robinson.
