Fantasy Football: Players to start in Week 2 lineups

Throughout the season, I’ll help you build the perfect lineup and become a league legend.

Welcome to the Fantasy Football Forecast!

Throughout the season, I'll help you build the perfect lineup and become a league legend. Each week, I will recommend three starters at each position as well as two sleepers in matchups I really like. I will also spotlight one Falcons player in each section.

It's not all too difficult to tell someone to start Bijan Robinson or Josh Allen on any given week, and I assume everyone reading this right now would already know to do so. Therefore, I'll try to focus these recommendations on players who might be on the starting or flex bubble.

Here are my fantasy starting recommendations for Week 2:

Running backs to start in Week 2

Travis Etienne Jr. @ Cincinnati Bengals

How could I not run this recommendation back after Etienne was arguably the most pleasant surprise in fantasy last week? The Jags running back was the RB5 in standard scoring and only one spot lower in PPR. Cleveland didn't have a ton of success running against Cincinnati in Week 1, but I'm betting on Liam Coen's run scheme once again.

David Montgomery vs. Chicago Bears

In three career games against his former team, Montgomery has never had fewer than 85 yards, and he's coming off a great performance against them last year. The Vikings' backs were active against Chicago's defense on Monday night so both Montgomery and Gibbs should have opportunities.

Javonte Williams vs. New York Giants

Williams had a great debut with his new team and finished as the RB3 in standard scoring formats. He played 77% of snaps for Dallas' offense and gets a Giants defense that gave up 220 rushing yards to Washington in Week 1.

Sleeper start — RJ Harvey @ Indianapolis Colts

Harvey was highly efficient in his first NFL game thanks in part to a 50-yard run. He'll likely need plays like that in the short-term to truly become a mainstay in starting lineups, but Harvey is more than capable of them and should only get more chances moving forward.

Sleeper start — Zach Charbonnet @ Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers had a lot of trouble slowing down the Jets' rushing attack. Although it could be a fluke and I'm slightly hesitant to bet against the Steelers defense, this could be a game where both Ken Walker and Charbonnet are productive.

Falcons spotlight — Bijan Robinson @ Minnesota Vikings

Robinson was the only running back in Week 1 to gain at least 100 receiving yards and finished as the RB2. Minnesota's defense presents a tough challenge, but it's not like you're going to leave him out of your lineup.

Wide receivers to start in Week 2

Tetairoa McMillan @ Arizona Cardinals

The rookie first-rounder had a nice day that could have been even bigger in his first taste of NFL action. He could see a lot of fellow-rookie Will Johnson, who had a fantastic game at corner for the Cardinals in Week 1, but he should also see a lot of targets.

Devonta Smith @ Kansas City Chiefs

Since 2021, Smith has the fourth-most fantasy points among wide receivers against the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, two of those games were Super Bowls, so season-long fantasy wasn't really a factor, but you get my point. This is a good spot for a bounce-back game by the Slim Reaper.

Calvin Ridley vs. Los Angeles Rams

Getting the Broncos defense in Week 1 was a tough draw for the entire Tennessee offense. Ridley was targeted on a quarter of his routes in Week 1, and he should be more productive on those looks in this matchup.

Sleeper start — Rome Odunze @ Detroit Lions

With nine targets on Monday night, the most of any Bears receiver, I think the Odunze-Caleb Williams connection is picking up steam.

Sleeper start — Quentin Johnston @ Las Vegas Raiders

If Travis Etienne wasn't the fantasy surprise of Week 1, it was Johnston. He finished as the WR2 and WR3 in standard and PPR leagues, respectively, and the Raiders' pass defense looks shaky.

Falcons spotlight — Drake London @ Minnesota Vikings

London is a surefire start when healthy but after leaving Atlanta's Week 1 game late in the fourth quarter due to a shoulder injury, his status is up in the air. Head coach Raheem Morris' comments on Wednesday, however, should give owners a bit more confidence.

"I do expect him to play," Morris said. "That's not saying that he is, but when you ask me, do I expect him to play, of course. Drake's the ultimate tough guy, and when he says he's going to go practice, that usually tells you a lot."

Tight ends to start in Week 2

Juwan Johnson vs. San Francisco 49ers

Johnson played on 99% of New Orleans' snaps, the highest share of any tight end during opening weekend. While Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau are out, Johnson could be one of the best fantasy options at the position due to the volume he should see.

Trey McBride vs. Carolina Panthers

The player just behind Johnson in offensive snap share among tight ends was … McBride! With six catches for 61 yards to start the year, McBride picked up right where he left off.

Brenton Strange @ Cincinnati Bengals

Strange had a solid, if not flashy, performance in Week 1. I think he can build on it this weekend against a Bengals defense that struggled against Harold Fannin and David Njoku.

Sleeper start — Hunter Henry @ Miami Dolphins

Tyler Warren had a big day in his professional debut against the Dolphins last week, and I like the connection between Henry and Drake Maye.

Sleeper start — Harold Fannin Jr. @ Baltimore Ravens

A favorite of the draft community, Fannin wasted no time making his mark on Sundays. The rookie led the Browns with nine targets and finished with 63 yards.

Falcons spotlight — Kyle Pitts @ Minnesota Vikings

Pitts looked dynamic at times in Atlanta's season opener and he finished with 59 receiving yards, the second-most for the offense. Bears tight end Cole Kmet had a sweet, 31-yard catch against the Vikings so perhaps there is space in that defense for Pitts to exploit.

Quarterbacks to start in Week 2

Justin Herbert @ Las Vegas Raiders

Herbert was awesome against Kansas City to start the season, throwing for 318 yards with three touchdowns and picking up another 32 yards on the ground. After the way he finished last year, Herbert has begun to really ascend.

Kyler Murray vs. Carolina Panthers

Although he wasn't elite for fantasy purposes, Murray was highly efficient in Arizona's win against Carolina. The Panthers fared pretty well against Trevor Lawrence in Week 1, but I expect Murray to have more success.

Justin Fields vs. Buffalo Bills

That performance in Week 1 wasn't expected from Fields, and I'm buying into this new version. He was efficient and effective as a passer, and his dual-threat ability was on full display. If he plays this way all year, Fields will be a league-winner.

Sleeper start — Drake Maye @ Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins were torched by Daniel Jones in Week 1, which is a good place to start when looking for an option in deeper leagues or two-quarterback formats. Back at home, Miami's offense might be able to put up more points and keep the pressure on New England's offense. Maye held up well throwing 46 passes in the season opener.

Sleeper start — Trevor Lawrence @ Cincinnati Bengals

I know I just said Lawrence didn't light it up against the Panthers, but he's going up against a Bengals defense that looked shaky in coverage against the Browns.

Falcons spotlight — Michael Penix Jr. @ Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota is among the most difficult road environments for offenses, but Penix continues to pass the tests placed in front of him. If he plays well this weekend, Penix should be a popular waiver wire add and a potential fantasy starter after finishing as the QB10 in Week 1.

Take a look at our best shots from week two practice ahead of the Sunday matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.
