FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons began their 2025 offseason program Tuesday, and someone unexpected was in attendance.
According to an initial report by WSB-TV sports director Zach Klein, quarterback Kirk Cousins showed up for the first day of voluntary workouts. Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot confirmed during his pre-draft press conference on Wednesday that Cousins was present for the start of voluntary workouts.
"I wouldn't say a surprise, because it is voluntary," Fontenot said of Cousins' presence. "These guys put in a lot with what they do, and they deserve time with their families if they decide not to come or to come. So, I wouldn't say it was a surprise."
Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said earlier this month at the NFL's Annual League Meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, that he didn't anticipate the 13-year veteran joining in the voluntary sessions, which is where the initial interest in Cousins' appearance on Tuesday began.
"I don't think he'll be there," Morris said. "If he is, we'll welcome him with open arms. But I'm not going to be fool enough to get myself worked up and angry about Kirk Cousins missing voluntary workouts."
Morris also said the Falcons and Cousins are "dealing with a business-type mode right now."
Atlanta has named Michael Penix Jr. as the starting quarterback in 2025. Morris, general manager Terry Fontenot and team owner Arthur Blank have repeatedly said the organization is comfortable keeping Cousins rostered as Penix's backup despite his sizable cap hit next season. Cousins, however, has told Falcons leadership that he still wants to be a starter in the NFL.
That's where the business part comes in. The Falcons have maintained they're willing to trade Cousins if the deal makes sense and he waives his no-trade clause to allow such a move. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday, though, there has not been any recent movement on that front. That could change quickly with the 2025 NFL Draft taking place this weekend, which could significantly alter the way teams feel about their quarterback situation.
The Falcons' Organized Team Activities are scheduled for May 27-28 and 30 and June 2-3 and 5. Mandatory minicamp is June 10-11.
