FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Atlanta Falcons starting right tackle Kaleb McGary was carted off the field during the early portion of Wednesday's practice. It appeared to be a lower leg injury. The team came together and huddled around McGary before he was carted off.
The severity of the injury is not known at this time. Elijah Wilkinson took over for McGary at the right tackle spot as practice continued. Wilkinson took the majority of left tackle reps in last Friday's preseason game after playing left guard the week before.
Following practice, a team spokesperson provided the following update on McGary:
"Kaleb McGary was carted off, is receiving an MRI and we'll have an update at the appropriate time."
This news comes after McGary recently signed a contract extension that would keep him in Atlanta through the 2027 season, essentially keeping the continuity intact amongst a Falcons offensive line that has worked together for a few years already. McGary was set to be Michael Penix Jr.'s blindside blocker.
However, the depth behind McGary and Jake Matthews at the other tackle position has been shaky. Backup swing tackle Storm Norton has not practiced with the team throughout majority of training camp with a lower body injury. As of Monday, head coach Raheem Morris said Norton is still working through that injury and the Falcons do not expect him to be available throughout this week and the team's final preseason game this Friday in Dallas. By Tuesday afternoon, though, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Norton underwent surgery on his ankle and will miss roughly six to eight weeks.
