Bijan Robinson continues to prove he's the 'real deal' with historic performance in Arizona

Robinson became the third played in Falcons history to surpass 2,000 scrimmage yards in a single season.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — As Bijan Robinson sat on the team bus prior to the Atlanta Falcons' Week 16 win and journeyed through the tailgating fans outside State Farm Stadium, he spotted a small white sign with a bright red heart.

It read: "Tucson ♥ Bijan."

Robinson grew up two hours south of where he and his teammates took on the Arizona Cardinals Sunday afternoon. Since his Pop Warner days as a 7-year-old, he's dazzled Arizona crowds.

At 23 years old, he continues to do the same. This time, on an NFL stage.

On Sunday, Robinson reached 5,376 career scrimmage yards, the third-most by a player 23 years old or younger in NFL history.

He also became just the third player in Falcons history to surpass 2,000 scrimmage yards in a single season, joining William Andrews, who did so in 1981 and 1983, and Jamal Anderson, who did so in 1998. Robinson now has 2,026 yards on the season, setting a new career high.

Robinson is one of only six active players to have hit the 2,000-scrimmage-yard mark and joins some modern greats, too: Derrick Henry, Christian McCaffrey, Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs and Jonathan Taylor.

Robinson earned all of these accolades in front of hundreds of friends and family. His grandmother in the stands was caught on camera screaming in glee, "That's my grandson," as he raced for the end zone following a three-play drive that consisted of a 41-yard pass to Robinson, a big run by Robinson and a 13-yard touchdown catch for Robinson.

Robinson had 168 total yards from scrimmage in the desert in which he grew up. In the aftermath, it wasn't lost on the star running back how special his performance was.

"It meant a lot," Robinson said. "To do this in front of Arizona, in front of people who supported me as a kid, obviously with my whole entire family being here; for me, this is a huge moment."

The moment wasn't lost on his opponents, either.

"If you were going to create a running back in 'Madden,' it would look a lot like Bijan Robinson" former Falcon and current Cardinals defensive lineman Calais Campbell said via the NFL on FOX broadcast.

The moment definitely wasn't lost on his teammates.

Five years ago, quarterback Kirk Cousins watched Dalvin Cook nearly reach the 2,000 scrimmage yards. Cook earned his second Pro Bowl selection that year. He was a second-team All-Pro. However, because of circumstances out of Cook's control (a death in his family that caused him to miss the team's final game), he never surpassed 2,000 scrimmage yards that year. His season ended at 1,918.

Still, Cousins remembered what that accumulation felt like in the moment. It's why he knew — without knowing the stats themselves — that Robinson was closing in on history.

"I always thought that was a real-deal stat," Cousins said. "If you can get 2,000 from scrimmage, you're the real deal."

And despite a season that didn't live up to expectations for the Falcons, Robinson continues to be a catalyst that springs forth hope.

"It's all God," Robinson said. "Countless prayers this offseason for this season. Just trying to do as much as I can for my team, for my offense. To see what the Lord has brought me through throughout this time — and brought the team through as well. The ups and downs, they are learning lessons and how we come out of that is what drives us as players."
