Game Notes: Falcons vs. Jaguars

    • Thursday night's game marked the ninth time the two teams have met in the preseason, with Jacksonville holding a 6-3 lead in the all-time series. Atlanta finished the 2012 preseason with a 1-3 record after suffering losses to Baltimore, Cincinnati, and Jacksonville and picking up a road win in Miami.
    • Atlanta's defense set the tone early as Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbertt and RB Rashad Jennings could not connect on a toss play, fumbling the ball at the Jacksonville five-yard line. DT Vance Walker dove on the loose ball, giving the Falcons offense a short field on their first possession.
    • Atlanta forced eight fumbles during the 2012 preseason, recovering three. Walker's fumble recovery was the Falcons fifth takeaway this preseason and CB Dominique Franks added an interception just before halftime to give the Falcons six takeaways in four preseason games.
    • In 2011, the Falcons caused at least one turnover in 27 consecutive games between 2010 and 2011, which was the longest active streak in the NFL and the longest streak since Chicago posted 25 straight games with a takeaway between 2007 and 2008.
    • RB Jacquizz Rodgers made short work of the offense's first series, running for a five-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. The score was Rodgers' second of the preseason and he finished the game with 24 yards on five carries (4.8 yards per carry) with one touchdown.
    • In the preseason, Rodgers logged 22 carries for 85 yards and two touchdowns. He also added five receptions for 32 yards out of the backfield.
    • Last season, Rodgers carried the ball 57 times for 205 yards with one touchdown. He also showed his versatility by catching 21 passes for 188 yards.
    • P Matt Bosher had an impressive game, punting seven times for a total of 331 yards. Bosher averaged 47.3 yards per punt and put three kicks inside the Jacksonville 20-yard line, including a punt that was downed at the one-yard line and another that went out of bounds at the four-yard line. In the preseason, Bosher dropped 11 of his 20 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
    • In 2011, Bosher pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line 27 times, which was tied for 10th in the NFL. Falcons' opponents started 62 of their 180 offensive possessions inside their own 20-yard line, which led the League.
    • Trailing 14-7, in the third quarter, QB Dominique Davis led the Falcons on a four-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to tie the game. After RB Dimitri Nance pushed the ball across midfield, Davis hit Cone for a 49-yard catch and run touchdown. Cone caught a short pass, made two defenders miss and raced down the sideline for his first score of the 2012 preseason.
    • Davis finished the game completing 14-of-24 pass attempts for 175 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The college free agent out of East Carolina posted an impressive preseason completing 33 of 56 pass attempts for 402 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
    • The Falcons defense was paced by LB Akeem Dent and CB Dominique Franks. Dent tied LB Pat Schiller for the team lead with eight total tackles, while Franks posted five tackles and one interception as well as two passes defensed.
    • The Falcons combined for six tackles for loss, while South Carolina products DE Cliff Matthews and DT Travian Robertson each notched one quarterback hit.
