Game Notes: Falcons at Eagles

  • With Sunday's win over the Eagles, Head Coach Mike Smith became the first coach in Falcons history to record 50 wins, improving to 50-21 since arriving in Atlanta in 2008. Smith is now the franchise's all-time wins leader, passing Dan Reeves who went 49-59-1 from 1997-03.
  • Smith reached the 50-win milestone in 71 games, making him the third fastest head coach to accomplish that feat since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Only George Seifert (62 games) and Chuck Knox (65 games) reached 50 wins faster than Smith during that time.
  • Entering today's game, Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid owned a perfect 13-0 record coming off of a bye. The Falcons are the first team to beat the Eagles after a bye since Reid became the head coach in 1999.
  • The Falcons opened the game with a 16-play, 80-yard drive that spanned 8:43 on the game clock. QB Matt Ryan hit WR Drew Davis for a 15-yard touchdown for his first career touchdown reception.
  • Ryan has thrown at least one touchdown in 22 straight games, which is the third-longest active streak in the NFL behind QB Drew Brees (49) and QB Tom Brady (40). He has now thrown at least one touchdown in 37 of his last 39 games.
  • Since 2008, the Falcons have scored an NFL-best 200 points on their opening possessions. Atlanta owns a 37-9 record when scoring first. This season, the Falcons have posted 27 points on their first offensive possessions.
  • Ryan tossed his second touchdown pass of the day on Atlanta's second possession, hitting RB Jason Snelling for a three-yard score. Ryan has posted six multi-touchdown games this season and the Falcons are 29-5 during his career when he throws two-or-more touchdowns.
  • Atlanta scored touchdowns on each of its first three possessions, as Ryan hit WR Julio Jones for a 63-yard touchdown for his third touchdown pass of the day and his longest scoring strike of the season.
  • Ryan got the Falcons offense off to a fast start as he completed 17 of 20 pass attempts for 197 yards with three touchdowns and a 147.3 passer rating in the first half.
  • Ryan finished the day completing 22 of 29 passes for 262 yards (75.9 percent) with three touchdowns, no interceptions and a season-best 137.4 quarterback rating. Sunday marked the 15th time in his career that Ryan has thrown for three-or-more touchdowns. Atlanta owns a 15-0 record when he accomplishes that feat, including a 4-0 mark this season.
  • Ryan's 137.4 passer rating was his highest of the season and the third highest of his career. The Falcons are 28-0 when his quarterback rating is above 100, including five wins in 2012.
  • Jones finished the game with five catches for a season-high 123 yards, averaging 24.6 yards per catch. Jones has recorded seven 100-yard games during his career, all of which have come in road contests.
  • In 11 career road games, Jones has 10 touchdown receptions, including each of his last seven road games. Additionally, the second-year wide out from Alabama has posted a team-high five touchdown receptions.
  • RB Jacquizz Rodgers recorded 110 all-purpose yards. The second-year back logged 60 yards on eight carries, 20 yards on five receptions and 30 yards on two kickoff returns.
  • TE Tony Gonzalez caught three passes for 29 yards to move into ninth place on the NFL's all-time receiving yardage list. Gonzalez has 13,797 career receiving yards and passed WR Henry Ellard who recorded 13,777 in his 16 NFL seasons.
  • Offensively, the Falcons racked up 392 yards of total offense, including a season-high 146 yards on the ground. Atlanta recorded 24 first downs during Sunday's game and since 2008, the Birds are 36-12 when notching 20-or-more first downs.
  • The Falcons scored on each of their first six possessions in Sunday's win, including touchdowns on each of their first three drives.
  • On the defensive side of the ball, the Falcons held the Eagles to 92 yards on the ground and just 178 through the air. The Birds sacked QB Michael Vick three times.
  • S Thomas DeCoud continued his strong season, leading the team with nine total tackles (six solo) and two tackles for loss. DeCoud helped the Falcons get off to a fast start, sacking Vick on a third down play on the Eagles first offensive possession. The sack was DeCoud's first of the season and his third career quarterback takedown.
  • DE Kroy Biermann had a breakout game posting a season-high seven tackles (five solo) with one sack, one tackle for loss and one quarterback hit. Biermann's sack was his second of the season and he has now notched 14.5 in his career.
  • DE John Abraham continued his impressive 2012 campaign, sacking Vick for his seventh sack of the season. Abraham is the NFL's active sack leader with 119.0 career sacks and since joining the Falcons in 2006 he has recorded 65.5 sacks, which ranks second in franchise history.
  • RB Michael Turner posted 58 yards on 24 carries. When he gets 23-or-more touches his teams are 22-1.
