Falcons sign former Mississippi State defensive lineman A.J. Jefferson, waive receiver

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Falcons signed defensive lineman A.J. Jefferson on Tuesday, a rookie out of Mississippi State. Jefferson recently spent time on the Los Angeles Rams' roster.

During his time at Mississippi State, Jefferson started two seasons at defensive end. He notched 12.5 sacks and 35 tackles for loss and six forced fumbles in his four-year career in Starkville, Miss.

Jefferson also earned SEC honors as he was named Defensive Lineman of the Week in the 2016 season after his dominating performance over South Carolina where he collected five tackles and one sack for loss.

In order to make room for Jefferson, Atlanta waived wide receiver Bra'Lon Cherry. The Falcons now have 14 defensive linemen on their roster.

Atlanta wraps up the preseason on Thursday night with a home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at 7 p.m. ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Falcons have until 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 2, to finalize their 53-man roster.
