Falcons complete interview with Anthony Weaver for head coach position

With Matt Ryan in place as president of football, the Falcons are searching for their new head coach.

The Atlanta Falcons are in search of the organization's 20th head coach in franchise history. The organization parted ways with Raheem Morris after the team's final game of the 2025 season. A new-look leadership group — including Falcons President of Football Matt Ryan — began the hunt to find his successor with the assistance of ZRG Partners and Sportsology Group.

"Our search committee will be structured a little bit differently than it has been in the past," Falcons owner Arthur Blank said Thursday. "(It will) still be made up of a component of people that represent our leadership in all areas of our businesses, but we're going to put heavy emphasis, we're hiring this president of football first. That's the goal, and over the next couple of days, we have a series of interviews set up. We want to get that person in their seat and have them lead the interviews for the head coach and general manager position going forward."

The Falcons will announce these interviews after they are completed with each candidate. We'll provide those updates here, along with relevant information and background about each candidate.

The NFL has specific rules for how and when teams can conduct these interviews. They are outlined here.

The Falcons have officially completed an interview with Anthony Weaver for their head coach position.

Current role: Weaver joined the Miami Dolphins as defensive coordinator in 2024.

Resume highlights:

  • Weaver put together a 7-season career as a defensive end in the league after being drafted in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He spent time on the Baltimore Ravens' vaunted defensive line and with the Houston Texans before retiring and officially picking up coaching responsibilities in 2010.
  • His coaching stops include time with the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns as their defensive line coach. In 2021, he returned to Baltimore to be the run game coordinator and defensive line coach before being promoted to assistant head coach/defensive line coach for his final two seasons.
  • Since becoming the Dolphins' defensive coordinator, Weaver has helped the unit allow 22 points per game the last two seasons, which ranks 15th in the league during that time.

Why he's a candidate:

Throughout his career, Weaver has been known to get the most out of a team's defensive line. During his time in Baltimore, the defensive line was dominant under his guidance.

In 2021, his first with the unit, the front was No. 1 in rushing yards allowed. In 2022, it finished No. 3. Then, in 2023, it only let six rushing touchdowns slip by, which was the fewest in the league. In 2024, Weaver's first year with the Dolphins, he helped the unit rank fourth in total defense and 10th in scoring defense. He also helped Bradley Chubb notch 8.5 sacks in 2025 after coming off an ACL injury the year prior.

Weaver earned an interview for the Falcons' head coach vacancy in 2024, so he has been on the organization's radar. Sticking with a defensive-minded coach could benefit the young players on Atlanta's defense, which showed a lot of promise in 2025.
