Falcons Comeback Falls Short Against GB, 43-37

FIRST QUARTER

The Green Bay Packers began the Monday night contest on offense. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers led a balanced rushing-and-passing attack that used seven plays to cover 81 yards in 3:47, capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run by Packers running back James Starks. GB 7 ATL 0

On the Falcons first offensive drive, it didn't take long before rookie tackle Jake Matthews was matched up against his cousin, Packers linebacker Clay Matthews. On 3rd-and-4, Ryan was given enough time from Matthews and company to find Roddy White for a 12-yard gain. Ryan then went to Julio Jones for a 19-yard strike. Later, facing another third-down situation, Ryan hit Jones again, this time for 18 yards to the Green Bay 4-yard line. Steven Jackson plowed into the end zone on the very next play. ATL 7 GB 7

The Packers next offensive drive began on their 20-yard line. Rodgers created big plays with his arm, including two completions to tight end Andrew Quarless, totaling 43 yards, moving inside the Falcons 20-yard line. Green Bay used five plays to get to Atlanta's 1-yard line when the first quarter ended.

SECOND QUARTER

Packers running back Eddie Lacy scored on a 1-yard run to open the second quarter. GB 14 ATL 7

The Falcons were forced to punt on their second offensive drive before Green Bay put together another scoring drive.  Rodgers and the Packers used 12 plays to go 63 yards in 5:56, finished off with a 38-yard field goal by Packers kicker Mason Crosby. GB 17 ATL 7

Trailing by 10 points, Ryan tried to get things moving on offense but instead was intercepted. Looking for Devin Hester, Ryan's pass was intercepted by Packers safety Morgan Burnett.

The Packers converted the turnover into seven points. Four plays after the interception, Lacy scored from one yard out, pushing the lead to 24-7.

Atlanta was forced to punt on its next drive. Green Bay's offense used the next 2:10 to add to its lead when Rodgers found wide receiver Jordy Nelson for a 10-yard score. GB 31 ATL 7

THIRD QUARTER

The Falcons opened the third quarter in explosive fashion. Ryan connected with Jones on a 79-yard strike. Four plays later, Ryan found Eric Weems for a 5-yard score. GB 31 ATL 14

Atlanta forced Green Bay to punt on its next drive, getting the ball back at its 46-yard line.  Six plays later, Falcons kicker Matt Bryant nailed a 50-yard field goal. GB 31 ATL 17.

The Packers matched Bryant's field goal with one of their own on the ensuing drive. Crosby drilled a 33-yard field goal, extending Green Bay's lead to 34-17.

FOURTH QUARTER

Ryan and Julio continued their unbelievable connection in the fourth quarter. Facing a 3rd-and-6 from Green Bay's 29-yard line, Ryan found Jones for 12 yards. One play later, Jones hauled in a 22-yard scoring strike from Ryan. GB 34 ATL 24.

Rodgers cooled Atlanta's momentum with a 60-yard TD pass on Green Bay's very next offensive drive. Falcons rookie Ra'Shede Hageman blocked the extra point. GB 40 ATL 24

Trailing by two scores, Atlanta's offense went right back to Jones, who grabbed three receptions for 46 yards on the drive. Jones' 9-yard grab gave the Falcons a first-and-goal at the Green Bay 3-yard line. Two plays later, Ryan found White for a 1-yard touchdown. The 2-point conversion attempt was stopped by the Packers. GB 40 ATL 30.

During the drive, Jones injured his hip and did not return to the game. He totaled 11 receptions for 259 receiving yards (franchise record) and one touchdown in the game.

Green Bay added another three points on the next drive, a 53-yard field goal by Crosby. GB 43 ATL 30.

Confident of a comeback, the Falcons narrowed Green Bay's lead. Ryan led a nine-play drive that covered 66 yards in 2:22, capped by a 2-yard touchdown pass to Harry Douglas. GB 43 ATL 37.

The Falcons needed a defensive stop with two minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Green Bay's rushing attack wouldn't allow it. Starks busted off a 41-yard run to Atlanta's 6-yard line. The Packers milked the game clock and won the game, 43-37.
