Banks Part of Initial Round of Cuts

The Atlanta Falcons today announced that they have waived LB Brian Banks, G Theo Goins, DT Neal Huynh, CB Terrence Johnson, S Charles Mitchell, DT Micanor Regis, T Alec Savoie, LB Pat Schiller, K Jeremy Shelley, CB Peyton Thompson, and RB Ronnie Wingo. The Falcons also placed QB Sean Renfree and TE Andrew Szczerba on injured reserve.

Banks, 6-2, 250 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a free agent on March 3, 2013. He spent the 2012 season with Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League (UFL) where he appeared in two games and posted one tackle. He received tryouts with Kansas City, San Diego, and San Francisco, and attended minicamp with the Seattle Seahawks prior to signing with the Locomotives.

Goins, 6-4, 317 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent on April 29, 2013 out of Central Florida. He was an All-Conference USA honorable mention performer for the Knights.

Huynh, 6-4, 315 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent on April 29, 2013 out of Ohio. He helped lead the Bobcats to the MAC Championship game in 2011.

Johnson, 5-9, 195 pounds, was originally signed by the New England Patriots as a college free agent out of California University of Pennsylvania on April 29, 2010. He was signed by the Falcons in 2012 and saw action in two games, primarily on special teams.

Mitchell, 5-11, 205 pounds, was selected as a sixth round (192nd overall) draft choice by Atlanta in 2012. He saw action in 10 games on special teams and as a reserve defensive back.

Regis, 6-3, 305 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent out of Miami on April 30, 2012. He served as a member of the Falcons practice squad during the 2012 season.

Savoie, 6-7, 322 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent on April 29, 2013 out of McNeese State where he was an All-Southland Conference performer.

Schiller, 6-2, 235 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent out of Northern Illinois on April 30, 2012. He served as a member of the Falcons practice squad during the 2012 season.

Shelley, 5-10, 165 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent out of Alabama on May 13, 2013. He served as the place kicker for the back-to-back BCS National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide in 2011 and 2012.

Thompson, 5-11, 180 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent on April 30, 2012. He served as a member of the Falcons practice squad in 2012.

Wingo, 6-3, 231 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent out of Arkansas on April 29, 2013. He rushed for 206 times for 1,089 yards with eight touchdowns during his career with the Razorbacks.

Renfree, 6-5, 225 pounds, was selected as the third of three seventh round (249th overall) draft choices by Atlanta in 2013. He started 36 of 42 career games at Duke completing 898 of 1,389 pass attempts (64.7 percent) for 9,465 yards with 51 touchdowns and 40 interceptions.

Szczerba, 6-6, 256 pounds, was originally signed by the Cowboys as a college free agent out of Penn State following 2012 NFL draft. He served as a member of the Falcons practice squad in 2012.

The Falcons roster now sits at 62 players. As part of the NFL's mandatory roster cut down, Atlanta will have to trim its roster to 53 players by 6:00 p.m. ET on August 31 and may establish an eight-player practice squad beginning on September 1.
