Weekly Coverage Recap: Falcons at 49ers


Head coach Mike Smith said the Falcons' two main points of focus as they close out the season are winning their remaining games and evaluating young players by giving them increased playing time.

Smith and cornerback Robert McClain joined 790 The Zone's Wes Durham and Dave Archer for Monday's radio show to talk about Sunday's win over the Redskins.

The Falcons held their annual community honors dinner Monday night to announce community service award winners, including the 2013 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, won by kicker .

Head coach Mike Smith and the Falcons are taking advantage of the extray day of practice by not only preparing for the 49ers, but also by using it to improve themselves as an entire unit.

One of the ailments of the Falcons earlier in the season was an inability to score touchdowns when they got inside the red zone, but in recent weeks scoring percentage in the area has been improving.

The defensive tackle also says this year has been the most fun for him, as he's been able to let loose and just have fun on the field.


Like many, Matt Ryan grew up watching memorable plays take place at Candlestick Park, and the QB is looking forward to being part of its history when the Falcons face the 49ers in what could be the final game played at the stadium.

Taking on Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin is no east task, but Robert Alford has faith that he and fellow rookie corner Desmond Trufant will be able to stop the wide receivers when they face them Monday.

CB Desmond Trufant knows that the 49ers pose a serious threat, but the rookie is confident that the Falcons are well equipped enought to come out of the matchup with a victory.
