FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Falcons (5-9) announced Monday that rookie running back Ito Smith will be placed on injured reserve.

Injuries have been a prominent storyline for the organization all season long, and that has not ceased with two games remaining. Smith is the second Falcons running back to go on IR this season, as starter Devonta Freeman was placed on IR prior to the team's Monday night game against the New York Giants in Week 7. He is eligible to come off of IR this week.

The fourth-round draft pick has played a prominent role as the No. 2 running back for the Falcons this season. Smith has carried the ball 90 times this year for 315 yards and four touchdowns; he has caught 27 passes for 152 yards.
