Today we remember SSG Chris R. Popham, a native of Prattville, Alabama, who entered the Army in September 2002.

SSG Popham deployed to Iraq three times and helped evacuate residents of New Orleans, following Hurricane Katrina with the 1st Cavalry Unit.

SSG Popham was a member of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, part of the 4th Infantry Division, and was stationed at Fort Carson, CO, beginning in January 10, 2015

He was later deployed to the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, CA, where he led the troop with Miles Laser Kills and assisted in multiple missions until his untimely death.

SSG Popham made an immediate impact on his soldiers through his love of physical fitness and general soldier discipline. His soldiers either did the right thing or they would conduct physical training all day!

He was asked to train on the Stryker Mobile Gun System, where he excelled.Â

He shot his first gunnery on the platform and earned Top Gun scoring 926 out of 1000 points, a distinguished score.

He conducted many field training exercises, where he assisted training multiple LT'S on mounted maneuvers and employment of the new platform.

When not in uniform, you would find him enjoying his time off with his children, going to the beach, hiking up a mountain with his dog in Colorado or just simply enjoying a nice cold beer and an occasional shot of Fire Ball!

He was the life of a party but also wasn't afraid to tell you what he thought!

He had a big heart and looked out for family, friends and his soldiers.

He loved football, mustangs, his kids and dog.

SSG Popham surely loved football and rooted for the Falcons!

He grew up loving Auburn and Falcons football and often attended games, when he was able.

SSG Chris Popham died on September 27, 2015 while serving with his unit in a training exercise at Fort Irwin, CA.

SSG Popham was preceded in death by his father, and is survived by his three children; Aubry, Amanda and Christopher Popham; his mother Doris Popham; four sisters: Christie Davies(Twin), Debra Morris, Sherry Williams and Dana Gentry as well as a host of Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, and friends.
