Quarterbacks Coach

Biography

D.J. Williams was promoted to quarterbacks coach on Feb. 13, 2025. He served as offensive assistant/assistant quarterbacks coach for the Falcons in the 2024 season.

Serving as offensive assistant/assistant quarterbacks coach in 2024, Williams worked with quarterback Kirk Cousins and rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. In 14 starts, Cousins completed 303-of-453 passes (66.9 percent) for 3,508 yards, 18 passing touchdowns and 16 interceptions for a 88.6 passer rating. In five appearances (three starts), Penix completed 61-of-105 passes for 775 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions for a 78.9 passer rating.

Williams helped guide quarterback Kirk Cousins to a franchise record in both completions (42) and passing yards (509) in Week 5. Cousins became the 13th player to pass for at least 500 yards and four touchdowns in a single game in NFL history, and the first since Joe Burrow did so in Week 16 of 2021. In the same game, he threw for 253 yards in the first half and 256 yards in the second half plus overtime, making him the only NFL quarterback in the Super Bowl Era to throw for 250-plus yards in the first and second half of a game, per OptaSTATS. Cousins earned two NFC offensive player of the week accolades, both in October wins over Tampa Bay, earning the honor again after completing 23-of-29 passes for 276 yards and four touchdowns for a passer rating of 145.9, his highest since 2017.

Penix completed 18-of-27 passes for 202 yards in his first career start, securing a 34-7 win over the New York Giants. In his second career start in Week 17, he threw his first NFL touchdown pass on fourth down with 1:23 remaining in the fourth quarter, with the following extra point tying the game at 24 and leading to overtime. In Week 18, Penix joined running back Bijan Robinson and wide receiver Drake London to make the Falcons the only team in NFL history with a 300-yard passer, 175-yard receiver and 150-yard rusher each under the age of 25 in the same game.

Williams joined the Falcons in 2024 after spending five seasons (2019-23) as an offensive assistant with the New Orleans Saints. Prior to joining the Saints staff, Williams assisted New Orleans during training camp in 2017. He also worked with the club's coaches and football operations department in 2018.

In 2023, Williams helped Saints quarterback Derek Carr complete 375-of-548 attempts (68.4 percent) for 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions with a 97.7 passer rating in his first season in New Orleans. Carr finished the season top 10 among quarterbacks in completions, passing touchdowns and passer rating.

Williams graduated from Grambling State in 2015, where he played quarterback for the Tigers from 2011-14, starting contests in all four seasons and earning tryouts with several NFL teams following the conclusion of his collegiate career. Williams is the son of Washington Commanders executive Doug Williams, who won Super Bowl XXII, making him the first black quarterback in NFL history to both start and win a Super Bowl.

From 2019-21 and in 2023, Williams participated in the NFL/Black College Football Hall of Fame Quarterback Coaching Summit. He served as the National Team quarterbacks coach at the 2023 Senior Bowl.
