This program recognizes youth football teams around the State of Georgia. One team was selected weekly beginning early September through mid-November.

In addition to being recognized on atlantafalcons.com/community, each of the 10 selected teams received a grant in the amount of $500 to support their organization.

Youth football league administrators, coaches, parents and community members are encouraged to nominate outstanding youth football teams in their area for the award by registering online.

The Captain in the Community presented by Russell Athletic program recognizes outstanding varsity high school football student-athletes around the State of Georgia that demonstrate strong leadership skills both on and off the field. This program encourages these student-athletes to continue to be leaders in their communities.

Each high school football season, the Falcons honor 10 varsity football student-athletes who excel on the field, in the classroom and in their communities. The winners are selected by members of the USA Football staff. In order to be considered a Falcons Captain in the Community presented by Russell Athletic, the student-athlete must meet the following criteria:

• 3.0 or higher grade point average
• Voluntary community service record (i.e. camp instructor, participation in school food drive/toys for tots program, mission trips, visits to nursing homes/hospitals, involvement with Boys & Girls Club/YMCA programs or other service projects.)

All Captains in the Community presented by Russell Athletic are listed on atlantafalcons.com/community and their school receives a $1000 grant in the student-athlete’s name to support future community initiatives.

As part of the Coach of the Week presented by Russell Athletics program, The NFL and the Atlanta Falcons will recognize twelve (12) head high school varsity football coaches around the State of Georgia for their hard work and dedication to making a difference in student-athletes lives on and off the field. Beginning early September through mid-November, each winner will receive a plaque signed by Head Coach Mike Smith and a $1,000 grant from the NFL’s Youth Football Fund to help his school maintain and upgrade it’s football program.

The Atlanta Falcons Gatorade Junior Training Camp

The Atlanta Falcons Gatorade Junior Training Camp is a free program geared towards third through fifth graders that stresses the importance of proper football technique, promotes physical activity and proper hydration.

This one-day traveling camp can host up to 150 children and takes them through 4-5 football stations. Each camp begins with a brief pep talk and ends with a fun activity for everyone involved.

All the equipment and supplies are provided by the Atlanta Falcons and Gatorade.

Those interested should have some one from your school (i.e., teacher, guidance counselor or principal) contact us regarding scheduling a camp. All inquiries should be made to Chris Millman at cmillman@falcons.nfl.com or 770-965-2838.

Schools must adhere to the following requirements:

• Each participant must have a waiver form signed by a parent or guardian. The waiver forms should be collected by the designated point of contact and given to the Falcons staff member prior to the event. No child will be allowed to participate without a signed waiver form.
• The school must provide 10 to 14 adult volunteers. Each volunteer must arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the camp to be prepped on the day’s activities and must be prepared to help with the entire execution of the program.
• Field or gym space.

Myrissa Lindsey, Health and Physical Education Specialist at Wynbrooke Traditional Theme School in Stone Mountain, GA, had this to say about her experiences with the Atlanta Falcons Gatorade Junior Training Camps:

“With the growing emphasis on becoming a healthier society my task is to start with our youngest generation. The Atlanta Falcons Gatorade Junior Camps help to make this an easier task by giving the children an opportunity to merge the sport of football and exercise into one. I have participated in the Atlanta Falcons Gatorade Junior Camps for the last 4 years and my children look forward to it every year. Not only do they look forward to it but so do I (to see the joy and excitement on their faces is priceless). The children stay engaged the entire time and are always left begging for more.”

Concussion Safety

This NFL public-service announcement (PSA) about sports concussions describes the importance of recognizing a concussion, taking time to recover and not returning to play too soon. In particular, the PSA urges players in all sports and at all levels not to hide concussions and advises coaches and parents to educate themselves about head injuries and to prevent any athlete who suffers such an injury from returning to play before securing approval from a qualified health professional.

The PSA was approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The PSA directs viewers to the CDC’s “Heads Up” Web site, www.cdc.gov/concussion, for more information on concussion education resources.

USA Football Player Academy

USA Football Player Academies teach football fundamentals and good football habits. Modeled after an NFL training camp with modified contact, for 3-and-a-half days Academies use age and position specific instruction for players ages 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14.

USA Football is the Official Youth Football Development Partner of the NFL and its 32 teams, making our Player Academy the premier way to develop youth football players. Academies are designed for players who want to improve their football skills and become the best they can be at their positions. Participants receive individual attention from their area’s top youth and high school football coaches on the field and in classroom sessions.

The USA Football Player Academy, was held June 20-June 23 at Lassiter High School in Marietta, GA.

USA Football State Forum

The USA Football State Forum forum brings together youth football leaders from across the State of Georgia to discuss topics impacting the sport.

The 2011 USA Football State Forum was held Saturday, March 26 at the Falcons complex in Flowery Branch.

The fourth annual forum and topics included:

1. Creating a State Association for youth football presidents/leagues
2. Concussion Awareness
3. Hydration
4. Updates to USA Football programs offered
5. Best practices (League issues/dealing with coaches, etc.)

USA Football Coaching School

USA Football, the sport’s national governing body on youth and amateur levels, and the Atlanta Falcons hosted a full-day coaching school for local youth football and middle school coaches on Saturday, June 4, at Lassiter High School in Marietta. Participants gained insight from an Atlanta Falcons defensive line coach Ray Hamilton and local high school coaches. This one-day clinic taught the fundamentals of every position, provided tips on practice planning as well as developing better offensive, defensive and special teams schemes.

Salute to Georgia High School Football

On behalf of the Atlanta Falcons, the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, Levy Restaurants, Russell, Air Tran Airways, Atlanta Falcons Physical Therapy Centers, PGA Tour Superstore and the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation, we’d like to thank all of the coaches that attended the third annual Salute to High School Football Luncheon Saturday, December 11, 2010.

For those of you that missed it, approximately 400 guests were on hand to enjoy the event that featured a keynote address from former Atlanta Falcons running back Warrick Dunn, the presentation of the Warrick Dunn Captain in the Community Award and remarks from Atlanta Falcons Head Coach Mike Smith and President, Rich McKay. Additionally, we announced the Atlanta Falcons Divisional Coach of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Winner. They are as follows:
