Originally signed as a college free agent by the Miami Dolphins following the 2012 NFL Draft. Signed by the Falcons as a free agent on March 10, 2016.

2015 (Dolphins)

Started eight of the 16 games he played in and recorded career highs in total tackles (37 – 25 solo) and sacks (3.5), as well as recording two forced fumbles and one interception, which he returned for a touchdown. Recorded sacks in back-to-back games twice and closed out the season with 3.5 sacks in his final eight games. Helped lead the Dolphins to a 15-13 win over the Baltimore Ravens after returning an interception 22 yards for a touchdown. Also added three tackles, one half sack, and three quarterback hits. Part of a Dolphins defense that held the New England Patriots to 10 points in the season finale. Notched a season-best five tackles with one sack.

A first-team all-Pac-12 selection after starting all 13 games at right end in 2011. Led the line and was fifth overall on the team with 55 tackles. Also posted a  team-best 10 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks. Played in 12 games, starting the final seven contests at left end, as a junior in 2010. Logged 39 tackles,  including 6.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Named an Academic All-Mountain West selection. As a sophomore in 2009, started and played in 10 games at left end. Finished teh season with 44 total tackles eight tackles for loss and three sacks despite missing the final two games of the season due to injury. Earned academic all-conference honors. Appeared in the final 12 games, starting 10 as a redshirt freshman in 2008. Totaled 31 tackles with 3.5 for loss and was an academic All-Mountain West selection.

Personal

Named to the all-district first team as a senior in 2006. Recorded 15 sacks and helped lead Hightower High School (Texas) to a district championship. Also lettered two years in track and won an academic excellence award. Son of Alisa and Derrick Shelby, Sr. Received his bachelor’s degree in sociology in the fall of 2011. His full name is Derrick Rodell Shelby II.
