Training Camp Preview: Who Will Start at RG?

After a trying 2014, Atlanta's offensive line developed into a strength last season. A big reason why the five-man unit progressed so much was the addition of Chris Chester.

A grizzled veteran, Chester, who had plenty of experience in Kyle Shanahan's system, brought much-needed stability to right guard. He thrived as a run blocker, consistently opening holes for Devonta Freeman; he was a reliable pass blocker, too, thanks to his sharp technique.

Back for 2016, the RG position seems to be Chester's to lose. However, since he's coming off rotator cuff surgery and is one of the roster's oldest players at 33, there might be an opportunity for someone to leapfrog him on the depth chart.

An interesting option is Mike Person, who spent his entire career at guard until he switched to center last year. And, although he struggled snapping the ball, he was a consistent blocker. If he only focuses on blocking, he could be a valuable asset in 2016.

Ben Garland will vie for playing time, as well. A former Bronco who spent most of last season on the practice squad, he's cross-training at guard and center and, if he impresses during XFINITY® Training Camp, can earn enough trust to step in when needed.

Wes Schweitzer, the lone rookie in the mix, will likely require more coaching before he's ready to assume a big role in Atlanta. Nevertheless, he worked with assistant offensive line coach Keith Carter at San Jose State and got some valuable reps during minicamp. How the sixth round draft pick fares during preseason will show the team what he's capable of in the short-term.

A positive sign for the rookie is that he's caught the attention of offensive line coach Chris Morgan, who likes what he's seen from Schweitzer's versatility and ability to learn. Who will be the Falcons' starting RG?
