Falcons Trim Roster Down to 75 Players

The Falcons waived 10 players, placed Mike Johnson and Marquis Spruill on injured reserve and placed Drew Davis and Zeke Motta on PUP on Sunday

The Atlanta Falcons today announced that they have waived defensive end Theo Agnew, linebacker Brendan Daley, linebacker Darin Drakeford, safety Devonta Glover-Wright, wide receiver Julian Jones, quarterback Jeff Mathews, linebacker Walker May, running back Jerome Smith, wide receiver Tramaine Thompson, and tight end Brian Wozniak. The club also placed offensive lineman Mike Johnson and linebacker Marquis Spruill on injured reserve, in addition to placing wide receiver Drew Davis and safety Zeke Motta on the Physically Unable to Perform list, and released safety Tyrell Johnson

Agnew, 6-4, 280 pounds, was signed by the Falcons on August 2, 2014. He was a two-year letterman and starter on the defensive line at Georgia State in 2012 and 2013 after transferring from the University of Massachusetts.

Daley, 6-3, 250 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent out of Hawaii on May 12, 2014. He posted 116 total tackles (68 solo) with 14.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, and three forced fumbles in two years at the University of Hawaii.

Drakeford, 6-1, 250 pounds, was originally signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as a college free agent out of Maryland following the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent time as a practice squad player with the Chiefs, New York Giants, and Indianapolis Colts during the 2013 season.

Glover-Wright, 6-0, 175 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent out of Utah State on May 12, 2014. He totaled 69 tackles (40 solo) with five tackles for loss and 10 passes defensed in two seasons for the Aggies.

Jones, 6-0, 202 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent out of Arkansas State on May 12, 2014. He caught 69 passes for 1,123 yards (16.3 yards per catch) with 11 touchdowns in four seasons for the Red Wolves.

Mathews, 6-4, 229 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent out of Cornell on May 12, 2014. He completed 901 of 1447 passes (62.2 pct.) for 11,284 yards with 72 touchdowns in 38 career games for the Big Red.

May, 6-5, 250 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent out of Vanderbilt on May 12, 2014. He logged 141 total tackles (86 solo) with 30.5 tackles for loss and 11 sacks in four years for the Commodores.

Smith, 6-0, 226 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent out of Syracuse on May 12, 2014. He finished his career as one of Syracuse’s top rushers, ranking 13th on the school’s all-time rushing list with 2,219 yards.

Thompson, 5-8, 167 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent out of Kansas State on May 12, 2014. He logged 109 receptions for 1,673 (15.3 yards per catch) with 10 touchdowns in four seasons at Wildcats.

Wozniak, 6-4, 255 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent out of Wisconsin on May 12, 2014. He played in 47 games, including 21 starts over his final two seasons with the Badgers.

Johnson, 6-6, 304 pounds, was selected by the Falcons in the third round (98th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft from Alabama. He has played in 18 games with one start in three seasons with the Falcons.

Spruill, 6-0, 224 pounds, was selected by the Falcons in the fifth round (168th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft from Syracuse. He logged 41 tackles for loss during his collegiate career, which ranks second in program history.

Davis, 6-1, 204 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent on July 26, 2011. He has appeared in 32 games while logging 16 receptions for 216 yards with three touchdowns. Davis has also played a key role on the Falcons special teams units.

Motta, 6-0, 206 pounds, was selected by the Falcons in the seventh round (244th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft from Notre Dame. He played in 10 games with one start as a rookie last season, recording 16 tackles (nine solo) and one pass defense.

Johnson, 6-0, 207 pounds, was originally selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round (43rd overall) in the 2008 NFL Draft. He has played in 53 games with 23 starts while totaling 126 tackles (100 solo) in his career.

The Falcons roster now sits at 75 players. As part of the NFL’s mandatory roster cut down, Atlanta will have to trim its roster to 53 players by August 30 and may establish a 10-player practice squad beginning on August 31.
