Could Falcons turn to Dwight Freeney? Dan Quinn says defensive end still on team's radar

If the staff feels it necessary to bring in some outside help, the Falcons could turn to a familiar face.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- While it remains to be seen how long Vic Beasley will be out for the Falcons, coach Dan Quinn confirmed he “will miss this week.” If the staff feels it necessary to bring in some outside help, the Falcons could turn to a familiar face.

Dwight Freeney, one of the best pass rushers during his tenure in the NFL, made a nice impression with Atlanta last season, his only with the organization, and could be an option if Beasley’s injury causes him to miss significant time.

“Yes,” Quinn answered when asked if Freeney was still on the Falcons’ radar. “(He’s) definitely somebody that we still talk to on a regular basis. We’re hopeful that he’s going to play this year, he certainly wants to. Right now, there are no changes on our end as we head into today.”

In his lone season with the Falcons, Freeney, 37, recorded three sacks and seven tackles. Over his 15-year career, the three-time All-Pro and seven-time Pro-Bowler registered 122.5 sacks, which places him 18th on the all-time career sacks list.
