Selected by the Carolina Panthers in the seventh round (249th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. Waived by Carolina on September 3, 2011. Signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars on December 12, 2011. Released by Jacksonville on December 29, 2011. Signed as a future reserve free agent by the Atlanta Falcons on January 10, 2012.

Played in all 16 games with six starts. Notched 65 total tackles (57 solo) with one sack, two tackles for loss, six passes defensed. Led the Falcons defense while totaling nine tackles (nine solo) with one quarterback hit and one pass defense against St. Louis (9/15). Picked up his first career sack when he dragged down QB Ryan Tannehill for a four-yard loss at Miami (9/22). Finished the game with a team-high six tackles (six solo), one sack, one tackle for loss and one quarterback hit. Recorded his first career interception when he picked off QB Peyton Manning in the first quarter of Atlanta's Week 2 win over Denver (9/17). His interception of Manning marked the Falcons third pick against the future Hall of Famer in the first quarter of the game. It was the fourth time in team history that Atlanta has recorded three picks in a single quarter. His 10 passes defensed ranked second on the team behind CB Asante Samuel, who finished the season with 19. Notched a career-high 10 tackles (eight solo) in Atlanta's Week 11 win over the Arizona Cardinals. The Falcons defense held Cardinals' QBs Ryan Lindley and John Skelton to just 70 yards on 11 of 27 passing and a 48.5 passer rating in the game.

Also returned 15 kickoffs for 271 yards and 23 punts for 274 yards and one touchdown. Named second-team All-Big East Conference as a senior in 2009, after finishing second in the conference with a 12.6-yard average on 21 punt returns with one touchdown. Scored on an 87-yard return against Cincinnati, the longest return in school history since 1936. As a junior in 2008, returned two interceptions for touchdowns, including a 28-yard return against Cincinnati.

Personal

Attended Patuxent High School in Lusby, Md., where he was an All-State selection. Named first-team All-Metro by The Washington Post as a defensive back after recording six interceptions, 19 passes defensed and 53 tackles as a senior. Named All-League as both a running back and a defensive back as a senior after earning the honor as a junior on defense. Rushed for 1,105 yards and 12 touchdowns while also catching 25 passes for 421 yards and four touchdowns as a senior. Also a dangerous returner, brining back five kickoffs for touchdowns during his senior campaign, one short of the national single-season record. Majored in political science at Connecticut. Born Robert McClain III on July 22, 1988.
