Played in seven games with seven starts in 2013. Tallied 43 total tackles (45 solo) with one tackle for loss, one interception, and three passes defensed. Scored his first career touchdown at Green Bay (12/8), returning an interception 71 yards for a score inside the final two minutes of the first half. The touchdown marked Atlanta’s third defensive score of the season. Weatherspoon’s 71-yard interception-TD was the 11th interception returned at least 70 yards for a score in franchise history and was the longest since CB Asante Samuel returned an interception 79 yards for a touchdown against Oakland in 2013. Finished the game with seven tackles (four solo), one interception and one pass defensed at Green Bay (12/8).

Career

Has emerged as a leader on defense in his four seasons with the Falcons. Played in 47 career games with 41 starts while posting 336 tackles (223 solo) with eight sacks, 16 passes defensed, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and one interception. Claimed a leadership role on the Falcons defense in 2012, taking over play calling duties in his third NFL season. Posted 114 tackles (84 solo), finishing second on the team second behind fellow linebacker Stephen Nicholas. Notched six tackles for loss, while adding three sacks, one interception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and four passes defensed in 2012. Helped the Falcons post one of the League’s top scoring defenses in 2012. Atlanta allowed 18.7 points per game, which was the fifth-best mark in League. Had a breakout sophomore season in 2011, starting all 16 games at linebacker and posting career-highs with 127 tackles (86 solo) and 4.0 sacks. Also added one fumble recovery and eight passes defensed. Made a key stop of RB Toby Gerhart on fourth and goal from the two-yard line that sealed a 24-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings (11/27/11). Played in 11 games with six starts in his rookie season in 2010, missing five games due to injury, and contributed with 52 tackles (38 solo) and one sack. Notched a career-high 10 tackles (eight solo) and his first career sack, dragging down Cardinals QB Derek Anderson in a win against Arizona (9/19/10). Posted nine tackles (eight solo) in his NFL debut at Pittsburgh (9/12/10).

Extra Points

In 2012, hosted a youth football camp at Flowery Branch High School for the local youth to participate. Weatherspoon was joined by several NFL players, including teammates Shann Schillinger, William Moore and Thomas DeCoud. Participated in Fashion Funds the Cure, a fashion show to benefit the Rally Foundation, a local childhood cancer research foundation. Falcons players served as escorts and models with local children who have been afflicted with cancer. In 2010, was a participant in the Atlanta Falcons Rookie Club sponsored by UnitedHealthcare of Georgia, this program gives the players the opportunity to take part in several charitable events.

College

A standout linebacker at the University of Missouri where he started each of his final 41 games. Recorded 413 career tackles (240 solo), 12.5 sacks, 43.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions (two returned for touchdowns), five forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 17 passes defensed. Graduated as the third player in school history to lead the team in tackles three times in a career as his 413 stops rank third in school history and 10th on the Big 12 Conference all-time list. As a senior, was voted team captain while earning Butkus Award finalist, Lombardi Award semifinalist and Lott Trophy quarterfinalist honors. Named a first-team All-Big 12 selection from 2007-09 as he averaged 132 tackles per season over that time span. His 155 tackles in 2008 rank second on the Tigers season-record list, while finishing fifth nationally that season. Graduated ranking 13th on the school career chart with 12.5 sacks.

Personal

Attended Jasper High School and was named the Texas District 22-3A Player of the Year as a senior after recording 98 tackles, eight tackles for loss, four sacks and two interceptions. Added second-team all-state honors while competing as a receiver. Finished with 27 catches for 428 yards and seven touchdowns. Was named a first-team all-district selection as a junior and was chosen as the Class 22-3A Defensive Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore. Was an all-state selection in track and an all-district honoree in basketball. Cousin of former WNBA star, Teresa Weatherspoon. His full name is Franklin De’Sean Weatherspoon. A native of Jasper, Texas.
