Originally selected by the Chicago Bears in the second round (57th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft. Signed a four-year extension with Chicago on July 27, 2008. Signed by Atlanta as a free agent on March 20, 2014.

Career

One of the most prolific return men in League history, holds NFL records for punt return touchdowns (13) and combined career return touchdowns (19). Totaled 3,241 yards on 264 punt returns and his 12.3 yards per return ranks fifth in the NFL history. Has also added 5,504 yards and five touchdowns on 222 career kickoff returns. Appeared in 123 games, including 46 starts at wide receiver in eight seasons with the Bears. Recorded 217 receptions for 2,807 yards with 14 touchdowns as a receiver. The three-time Pro Bowler tied the NFL record for return touchdowns in 2013 recording his 19th career return score. Has scored touchdowns on 13 punt returns, five kickoff returns and one missed field goal return. Named an All-Pro by the Associated Press three times in his career. Was named to the NFL’s All-Decade team by the AP and ESPN for the 2000s. Became the first player in NFL history to return the opening kickoff of a Super Bowl for a touchdown when he returned Super Bowl XLI’s opening kick 92 yards for a score. In 2013, led the NFL in total return yards with 1,692 and kickoff return yards with 1,436. Was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for the 13th time in his career after setting a single-game franchise record with 249 kick return yards against Minnesota in Week 2. Played in 15 games with five starts in 2012. Compiled 1,200 total yards including 242 receiving yards, 331 punt return yards, 621 kickoff return yards, and six rushing yards. Posted 23 receptions for 242 yards with one touchdown as a receiver while returning 40 punts and 24 kickoffs. His five punt returns of 20-or-more yards in 2012 were tied for the fifth most in the NFL. Averaged 8.3 yards per punt return and 25.9 yards per kickoff return.

College

Played offense, defense and special teams for the Miami Hurricanes (2003-05), starting games at cornerback, nickelback, running back and fullback while seeing time at wide receiver and returning punts and kickoffs during his collegiate career in which he returned six kicks for touchdowns (two kickoffs & four punts). Played primarily as a cornerback tallying 12 tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss, one interception, and two passes defensed during his junior season. Also saw time on offense gaining 70 yards on eight rushes and catching three passes for 15 yards while appearing in 10 games with one start. Named to Walter Camp All-America team as the NCAA’s best kick returner, selected as the top kickoff returner by Sporting News and tabbed a first-team all-ACC selection at kick returner as a sophomore. His four return touchdowns were the second-most in the country and tied Santana Moss’ single-season school record. Also became the first Hurricane to return two punts for scores in a game (vs. Louisiana Tech). As a freshman, played wide receiver and returned kicks ranking sixth nationally in kickoff return average at 28.7 yards per return while adding 116 yards on four catches (29.0 avg). Captured the 2004 Big East indoor long jump title as a member of Canes track and field team.

Personal

Attended Suncoast High School (Riviera Beach, Fla.). Was widely regarded as one of the top recruits in the nation as a senior and was selected a Parade All-American and USA Today first-team AllAmerican. Rated the No. 1 prospect in Florida and No. 6 player in the nation regardless of position by SuperPrep. Tabbed as the top defensive back prospect coming out of high school in Florida by numerous publications and earned first-team all-state honors as a senior. Rushed for 1,014 yards and 12 touchdowns on 94 carries while gaining 1,028 yards on 38 catches with nine touchdowns in addition to throwing for five touchdowns and 225 yards during his senior season. Also a track standout and received All-America accolades and ranked second nationally in the long jump as a junior. Majored in liberal arts at Miami (Fla.). Hester and wife, Zingha, have two sons.
