Was an ASWA Class 5A All-State selection after posting 150 tackles (95 solo), seven sacks, one INT, three FRs and four PD as a senior...Also caught 20 passes for 496 yards and three TDs...Was a consensus All-State pick as a junior, recording 96 tackles (61 solo) with 12 sacks and three INTs.

In 2013, served as a mentor at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Chesapeake’s MentorZing event...In 2014, Upshaw joined teammate DeAngelo Tyson in donating and distributing 500 books to students at Moravia Park Elementary School (Baltimore City) in an effort to encourage childhood literacy.

Visited patients to spread holiday cheer at the Johns Hopkins Children Center.
