Training Camp Preview: Which CB Will Step Up?

Posted Jul 25, 2016

When XFINITY Training Camp begins this week, a group of young cornerbacks will battle for a limited number of roster spots. Who can impress coaches enough to solidify a spot on the depth chart?

With Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford in tow, the Falcons have one of the best cornerback duos in the NFL. Beyond those two, however, it’s unclear how the rest of that position’s depth chart will play out.

Jalen Collins won’t be available until Week 5 due to his suspension, and with him set to miss a month of the regular season, other players will have a chance to step up and earn playing time. Among those who will push for snaps are Akeem King, Devonte Johnson, David Mims II, Jordan Sefon and DeMarcus Van Dyke.

King, drafted by Atlanta in the seventh round in 2015, made a lot of progress last season on the practice squad. He eventually made it onto the active roster and, with the size and aggressiveness head coach Dan Quinn likes from his corners, could be a factor this year — especially in the Falcons’ nickel package.

One of Atlanta’s college free agent signings in the spring, Johnson is coming off a successful career at Weber State, where he made 29 tackles and deflected 11 passes as a senior.

Mims, another CFA addition, may not have ideal height at 5-foot-11, but scouts like his work in press coverage and his closing speed. He’s known for his consistent tackling, as well, which can endear himself to Atlanta’s coaching staff.

Sefon might not have been drafted either, but multiple teams, including Seattle, were reportedly interested in the St. Cloud State defensive back. A four-year starter in college, Sefon received all-conference honors following each of his campaigns with the Huskies.

More experienced than Atlanta’s other depth CBs, Van Dyke is on his fifth NFL team and has played in 25 regular season games. The 27-year-old has racked up 17 tackles, four pass deflections and an interception so far in his career.
