2008 Athletes of the Week

 

Each Friday night during high school football season produces a new set of heroes and game-changing performances.

With help from Under Armour, Hibbett Sports and the Atlanta Falcons, fans selected the most outstanding athlete for each week of the season.


Past Athletes of the Week

Synjin Days, QB, Hillgrove High School -- The junior quarterback rushed for 205 yards and five touchdowns on 19 carries as Hillgrove claimed the first state playoff appearance in school history with a 43-29 victory over Dalton.

Michael Boydston, RB, Walton High School -- For an impressive third time this season, Michael Boydston of Walton High School was voted as this week’s Under Armour High School Athlete of the week. The senior tailback rushed 47 times for 257 yards and four touchdowns in the Raiders' 28-21 victory against rival Roswell.

Treavor Scales, RB, Dunwoody High School -- Treavor Scales was recognized for his 16 carries, 258 yards and four touchdowns in Dunwoody’s 38-14 victory over McNair High School. "He has verbally committed to Harvard University," his coach said. "Treavor is an exceptional young man. He is well liked and respected in school and on the field. He is one of the most knowledgeable players on the field. He understands both sides of the ball..." Scales has a 3.93 GPA and scored 1280 on the SAT. He has been selected class president each of the last four years.

Brandon Jacobs, RB, Parkview High School -- Jacobs had a 43-carry, 272-yards, three-touchdown performance in which he scored the game-winning touchdown in the third overtime period to lead the Panthers over South Gwinnett 34-31. "Brandon is an outstanding running back and probably the best player on both sides of the ball when he plays defense as well as a running back," Coach Cecil Flowe said. "He is strong and powerful and is hard to bring down. He has been an outstanding back for our program and has always been a standout performer even in his youth league days. He loves to carry the ball and has done a fine job this year rushing for more than 1,200 yards so far. Brandon has committed to Auburn University but has a bright baseball future as well.”

Drayton Calhoun, RB, Tucker High School -- In quite an amazing feat Drayton rushed for 171 yards on only three carries; all three went for touchdowns (67, 63 and 41 yards) in the Tigers' 49-7 victory against North Springs. "Additionally, Drayton personifies what being a student-athlete is about, while possessing tremendous athletic ability he understands the importance of education," head coach Frank Stephens said. "Drayton will graduate early in December and enroll at LSU in January."

Cole Moon, RB, St. Pious High School -- Cole put on a dominating perfromance inthe Golden Lions recent 38-8 victory over North Atlanta.  Cole gained 195 yards with 4 touchdowns on 34 carries. "Cole Moon is the quintessential fullback-he takes a pounding and keeps going all day," said his coach, Paul Standard, "He's as tough as a 30 cent steak! Cole is an unselfish player that will do whatever is needed to help the team... If that means carrying the ball 30-plus times a game, or if it means blocking, or carrying out fakes and taking the hit he will do it! Cole is obviously a big part of our offensive attack and we are certainly glad he is just a junior."

Michael Boydston, RB, Walton High School -- Boydston carried the ball 25 times for 335 yards and three touchdowns in the Raiders' 42-14 victory against Alpharetta. Toney Williams, RB, Milton High School  -- Toney Williams, running back from Milton High School is recognized for his 250 yards and four touchdowns performance on 24 carries in the Eagles 42-13 win over Alpharetta. On the season, Toney has carried the ball 136 times for an impressive 1,145 yards and 17 TDs. He is committed to the University of Tennessee and will graduate in December and enroll at Tennessee in January.

Michael Boydston, RB, Walton High School -- Michael Boydston is recognized for his stellar performance in the Raiders 41-28 victory over Cambell High School as he rushed for 296 yards and 5 touchdowns on 34 carries.  In the last two games Boydston has scored 9 touchdowns rushing for over 500 yards. He gives credit to his offensive line, as well as Dylan Tante, his blocking back.  Click here for video.

Juwan Thompson, RB, Woodward Academy -- Against Westminster Thompson rushed for 220 yards and two touchdowns. The previous week he rushed for 116 yards and a pair of scores. "Juwan is a very dynamic runner with size, speed and power," Woodward Academy coach Mark Miller said. "Juwan is learning the value of hard work and discipline and has a bright future ahead of him."

Clayton Whitlock, RB, Kennesaw Mountian -- Rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns in 38-21 win vs. Pope High School. “Clayton was a kid who was in the shadows of our star back last year, Dwight Woodruff, but through hard work and perseverance this off-season has developed into a very valuable player for us this year," Mustangs head coach Scott Jones said.
