Former Falcons lineman Dronett passes away

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Former Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Shane Dronett passed away Wednesday.

Dronett, 38, was a member of the Falcons from 1996-2002 and a member of the team's 1998 NFC Championship squad. The lineman began his career in 1992 with the Denver Broncos and played one season for the Detroit Lions before joining the Falcons. He started 51 games for Atlanta, including 32 straight games in 1998 and 1999. He totaled 50 tackles (6.5 sacks) in 1998. For his career, the defensive tackle totaled 44 sacks and three interceptions.

The Texas native is survived by his wife and two children.

“The entire Atlanta Falcons family is saddened by the news of Shane Dronett’s passing," Owner and CEO Arthur Blank said in a statement released by the team. "Our deepest condolences are with his family during this difficult time.”
