Falcons-Jaguars Game Notes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- News and notes from the press box at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.

  • The Falcons burst out of the gate on their first play from scrimmage with a 35-yard pass from Joey Harrington to Alge Crumpler to put the team in scoring position. The catch was the longest play from scrimmage thus far this season. The drive stalled, however as Harrington was sacked on second and third down, forcing a Michael Koenen punt.
  • Running back Jerious Norwood returned the opening kickoff - his first action in that role this season.
  • Defensive end John Abraham notched his first sack of the season on the Falcons' opening defensive series, dropping quarterback David Garrard for a seven-yard loss. Defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux followed suit late in the first quarter with the Falcons' second sack of the season when he dumped Garrard for a four-yard loss.
  • Babineaux added another sack and forced fumble late in the second quarter, giving him a career-high two sacks in the game.
  • Falcons tackle Todd Weiner registered his 100th career NFL start.
  • BUMPS AND BRUISES: Starting left tackle Wayne Gandy suffered a left hamstring injury with 4:20 remaining in the first quarter. Gandy limped off the field with assistance from the medical staff. Gandy, who did not return to the game, was replaced in the game by Renardo Foster.
  • Wide receiver Roddy White racked up 70 receiving yards on three catches in the first half, including a 35-yard catch in the second quarter.
  • Running back Warrick Dunn moved into third place on the Falcons' all-time rushing list after a five-yard gain in the second quarter. The carry gave him 5,337 rushing yards as a Falcon, surpassing Jamal Anderson (5,336). Gerald Riggs (6,631) is first on the list, followed by William Andrews (5,986).
  • The scrappy four-yard touchdown run by Dunn with 57 seconds remaining in the second quarter was the Falcons' first touchdown of the 2007 season. The Falcons were a perfect 4 of 4 on third down on the 12-play, 73-yard scoring drive. The score put the Falcons ahead at halftime, 7-3.
  • Kicker Matt Prater missed both of his field goal attempts on the day wide right - kicks of 43 and 26 yards.
  • The Falcons' four sacks of Jacksonville Garrard was the most in a game since November 12, 2006 when the Birds' defense notched five sacks against the Cleveland Browns at the Georgia Dome.
  • The Falcons gave up seven sacks of Harrington, one more than they surrendered to Minnesota last week in the season opener.
