Fitness Zones

In an effort to combat Georgia's rate of childhood obesity -- currently one of the highest in the nation -- the AFYF in 2005 launched a new signature program, Falcons Fitness Zones, to help kids become more physically active and make healthier eating choices. The AFYF has committed nearly $2 million over a three-year period to the YMCA, YWCA and Boys & Girls Clubs at Fitness Zone sites located in communities in metro Atlanta and Gainesville, Georgia. Through the Falcons Fitness Zones, the AFYF works with community partners to leverage existing physical fitness programs for youth, and enhance them through the strategic use of Atlanta Falcons resources.

Falcons players and cheerleaders make regular visits to the Fitness Zones where they engage kids in physical activities and emphasize the benefits of exercise and proper diet. As role models for many of the children in the Zones, Falcons players and cheerleaders can have a strong influence in changing the behaviors that lead to childhood obesity.

Presently there are 18 sites operating across five Fitness Zones, with the potential to reach nearly 12,000 predominantly disadvantaged youth. Several of the sites are located within a one-mile radius of the Georgia Dome.
