The Falcons and Rooms To Go have been teaming up all year to provide room makeovers for worthy families around the Atlanta area, but Monday provided a special situation. The Tor family of Duluth, Ga. — a family that has seen its share of trials and challenges — received an entire home makeover and a visit from Michael Turner, Brent Grimes and Todd McClure.

Monday was Todd McClure, Michael Turner and Brent Grimes’ last day off after last Thursday’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

On their final day of relaxation before they return to work to prepare for next Monday’s showdown with the Saints and the final playoff push this season, they spent the afternoon at the Duluth, Ga., home of Theo and Miatta Tor.

The Tors and their four children, Daniellette (6), Ariel (4), Isabella (3) and two-month old MacKenzie, were the recipients of a full home makeover through the partnership with Rooms To Go, the Falcons and CBS Atlanta 46. The three have done seven individual children’s room makeovers this season. The final makeover was for the Tors and the whole family got to appreciate an entire home makeover, furnished by Rooms To Go.

One year ago, Theo and Miatta lived in a one-bedroom apartment. Through a lot of hardwork and faith in life and each other, the two are now renting their home in Duluth. For Theo, it’s the first time he’s ever lived in an individual house.

Rooms To Go’s chief strategic officer, Warren Kornblum, was on hand to witness the “reveal” and meet the Tor family. It’s the second year he’s partnered with the Falcons on the makeovers. He worked with McClure and Turner last season.

The Falcons and Rooms To Go were connected with the Tors through the Atlanta Union Mission. The Tors’ pastor at Phoenix Community Church of Atlanta, Brian Holland, connected the family with the mission. From there, as Kornblum said, it was a no-brainer to help this family.

The partnership with Rooms To Go and the Falcons was a natural one and the selection of the Tors for the final full-home makeover was a perfect fit.

“We wanted to again make a difference in the community and when I heard Theo’s story, I knew we had to help him,” Kornblum said. “We’re very much a company that believes in paying rent for the space that we occupy on this Earth.”

Theo is a former Marine, injured in service during his tour of duty, and a first-hand witness of the tragedy of war. Some of his friends and unit members were killed by the same land mine that injured him when his convoy hit it while patrolling in Iraq. He and his wife started their family during his service and it continued to grow in size.

The typical struggles that accompany a returning and injured Marine were in play for Theo upon his return to the U.S. He and Miatta have been through thick and thin together and their testimony of love and dedication is an inspiration to everyone, according to Holland.

“They’re just fighters,” Holland said. “I’ve never seen a couple that had more valid excuses for not being together, yet fight to stay together. The war took a toll on Theo.”

On Monday, as people filed in and out of the Tor home, workers coordinating the event and others moving furniture or otherwise in the family’s house, Theo made it a point to speak to every person involved individually. He introduced his wife and their youngest child while they awaited their other three children to return from school for the surprise of their new furnishings in their three-bedroom home.

Many of the people Theo spoke to as he waited for his daughters to return home were the recipient of a Theo Tor hug. He also stressed to anyone that would listen first his sincere gratitude for what they were doing and second that he was available to help in any of their personal charitable endeavors.

When the three daughters arrived home, Turner, Grimes, McClure and two Falcons cheerleaders greeted them at the door.

It’s not often that Falcons players are trumped by the cheerleaders, despite their popularity, but on this day with three girls in the mix, it happened. Despite being a personal trainer and an aspiring MMA fighter, there’s only so much testosterone Theo can bring into a home full of girls.

Looking at the smile on his face on Monday, one could tell he didn’t care. Even though it took a while for his daughters to warm up to the Falcons players (though Freddie Falcon was a big hit) Theo wouldn’t change a thing.

As the day came to a close the gathering of red and black, smiles and laughter moved to the front yard.

It only took one look around to understand why the Tors were so deserving of a little help from the Falcons and Rooms To Go. The front yard was filled with neighbors and children there to witness the giving back to a family that has given so much.

Of course, Theo and his family hugged everyone of them.
